Introduction to Rosemaling: Hallingdal Style
January 25, 2025
Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum Folk School
Decorah, IA
If you’ve ever thought about trying rosemaling, here’s a great opportunity to take the brush in hand! Rosemaling is the wonderful folk art of Norway that is based on the flowing scrolls and flowers that are made up of "C" and "S" strokes. This class introduces students to these basic strokes that are the foundation of rosemaling, as well as the detailed line work that completes a rosemaling project. The class will include demonstrations and plenty of hands-on practice. Students will be provided with all the supplies and materials needed to practice strokes and complete a project on board, including brushes, paints, medium, boards, and a palette knife. The class will be taught using acrylic paint. If you’ve painted with oil, this would be a good opportunity to explore acrylics. This will be a fun class that will give anyone who is interested in trying rosemaling the opportunity to dip your toe in the water, or actually tip your brush into the paint!

Rosemaling Artist and Instructor
Lise Lorentzen currently resides in Bel Air, MD, after spending most of her life as a resident of Staten Island, NY. Lise grew up in a household with strong ties to the Norwegian-American community, which included her church, Sons of Norway, and family back in the “old country”. She was a child that always played with paints, so it was natural for her parents to enroll her in a rosemaling course given at her local Sons of Norway lodge.
