Explore this beautiful folk art that originated in Norway. No painting experience is necessary and those who have painted before who are interested in learning or developing Rosemaling skills are welcome. Students can paint with oil or acrylic paint. The class will cover brush strokes, color mixing and how to paint a design. More experienced students can select a project of their own.

HYBRID CLASS Meets via Zoom and In-Person Central Time

This is a revised brush stroke class. Learn the anatomy of a brush, brush care, types of brushes and the brush stokes they can make. We will dive into how to load a round, flat, filbert and liner brush for “stroke work”; execute various brush strokes such as comma, teardrop, S, crescent, dipped crescent, spiral, circle stroke as well a dots.

This class is a great way to continue and expand your practice of Norwegian Rosemaling. A perfect next step for those who have taken Julie’s Brush Techniques class. We’ll be painting Telemark Style Flowers. Patterns are included and taught step by step.

North House Folk School

This class will introduce or reintroduce you to the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling. We will be learning about the Telemark Rosemaling style with fanciful scrolls, flowers, and linework, as well as “C” and “S” strokes. At the end of the class, you will have learned about Norwegian rosemaling history, preparing your woodenware, paints, caring for brushes, and the brushstrokes that are key to the Telemark Rosemaling style. We provide the paints, brushes, and plate project. Come immerse yourself in the beautiful Norwegian rosemaling.

You’ll learn stroke work techniques, antiquing, and explore the unique floral motifs characteristic of the Ryfylke style. Join us for a rewarding experience as you craft a beautiful, functional piece that showcases the rich heritage of rosemaling.

In this class designed for advanced beginners to intermediate students, you’ll learn the foundational techniques of Telemark rosemaling, one of the most popular and recognized styles. Scroll structure is the foundation of Telemark rosemaling. Learn how to construct scrolls, place and support flowers with substantial stems, and distribute color to create strong designs. Designs will be freehand painted on the surface of your choice.

A portion of the class will be spent doing design critiques of Telemark pieces. Bring a piece you painted and we will spend time discussing the strong aspects of the design, and what changes could be made to improve the composition. Don’t be shy - the class will even deconstruct the weaknesses of the instructor’s designs.

Dive into the unique Gudbrandsdal style as you paint a ball-footed Bombay box. You’ll learn how to blend colors seamlessly and add depth to your design with overstrokes and detailed finishing touches. This class focuses on mastering the key elements of Gudbrandsdal rosemaling. Create a beautifully decorated box that showcases this distinctive Norwegian style.

Learn to paint beautiful transparent Telemark quickly using minimal colors, and adding finger-painted flowers for extra flair. In the second half of the class, you'll focus on lining the scrolls and flowers, applying precision to enhance your overall design. All painting will be done freehand, offering a true test of your skills. Working on prepared practice boards, you’ll have plenty of hands-on opportunities to experiment with transparency techniques. This is your chance to explore Transparent Telemark in depth and elevate your rosemaling artistry to new heights!

A Telemark Rosemaling design will be used to execute details for scrolls and flowers. The class will cover various line work options for main design elements as well as embellishments that surround the designs and are used in borders. Students can paint with acrylic or oil paint.

North House Folk School

During this class you will be introduced to rosemaling. Rosemaling is a folk art of Norway that has distinct styles in specific regions and valleys, however rosemaling as a whole celebrates the visual language of Nordic regions. During its height in the 1800s it was a way to bring the beauty of nature inside for the long winter months. In class we will go over the basic technique and history of this decorative style. We will practice the fundamental painting process using oil paint on paper. Basic supplies and rosemaling patterns will be supplied by the instructor. At the end of class, you’ll go home with worksheets and a small decorated wall plaque.
